In Detail
ER Medication Trends Shifted Following Federal Autism Announcement
Researchers from Harvard and Brown analyzed more than 294 million patient records from hospitals and clinics across the U.S. to examine prescribing patterns after a September 2025 White House briefing.
Acetaminophen medication
The study found that acetaminophen orders for pregnant patients in emergency rooms fell 10% between Sept. 22 and Dec. 7, 2025, after the White House linked use during pregnancy to a higher autism risk. Orders dropped 16% in the first month and reached a low point of 20% in the third week before gradually returning toward expected levels by early December. The authors noted the analysis did not include over-the-counter acetaminophen purchases, which remain the most common way the medication is used.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. speaking
During the same period, outpatient prescriptions for leucovorin in children ages 5 to 17 rose significantly after the administration announced plans to begin the approval process for the drug as a possible autism treatment. The analysis showed a 93% increase in the first month, a 113% spike in week two, and an overall rise of about 71% through early December. Leucovorin is typically used to treat folate deficiency and reduce side effects from some chemotherapy drugs, and while it has been studied for certain children with autism and cerebral folate deficiency, experts say its broader role in autism care remains unclear.
